Wojtek Jakieła | Amateur Radio, Geocaching and Lifestyle

Hi, I'm Wojtek.

I like talking over the radio, finding things hidden deep in the woods, riding my bike to places I've never been, and every now and then building something that probably nobody but me needs.

WordCamp Wrocław 2026: Back on the Speaker Side for the Second Year in a Row

For the second year in a row, I spoke at a WordCamp. This time in Wrocław, with a talk about AI agents, an almost full room, and far more stress about the PKP app than about stepping onto the stage.

Cycling from Leżajsk to Marysin. At Least That Was the Plan.

The plan was simple: leave the car in Leżajsk, cycle to the amateur radio gathering in Marysin and find a few geocaches along the way. Six kilometres later, the weather decided it had prepared an entirely different schedule for me.

Geocaching Party 2026 in Łódź. One Day Was Definitely Not Enough.

Geocaching Party 2026 in Łódź showed me that one day is simply not enough for a Mega Event of this scale. A great event, good caches, a beautiful city and 17 km on foot after almost no sleep.

Komoot and Cycling Navigation: After One Route, I Have More Questions Than Praise.

Komoot was supposed to make my cycling trip easier. I found a route on my computer, saved it, added nearby geocaches and set off. After one ride, though, I have more questions about the navigation than reasons to praise it.

The Market Is Increasingly Deciding When We Buy a Computer.

I heard about Apple computer price increases just as I was seriously considering replacing my Mac mini. My first reaction was not anger but sadness: planning a sensible upgrade is becoming harder when the market keeps moving the goalposts.

Damn, It Actually Works: Giving My YI Cameras a Second Life.

I was planning to replace my entire camera system, but before buying new cameras, I decided to rescue the ones I already had. Kami had turned them into a festival of ads, pop-ups and subscription offers. An old mini PC running Debian, Docker, Home Assistant and Scrypted gave the YI cameras a second life in Apple Home, with recordings going to iCloud. Then the air conditioner, dehumidifier and an old Brother printer joined the project too.

From TinkerCAD to Fusion 360: My First 3D Project Without Alpine Acrobatics.

Moving from TinkerCAD to Fusion 360 was supposed to show me how to design things in a more sensible way. My first project was a case for a portable balun, complete with a sketch, a caliper, a bad first print and several corrections.

1670 Season 3 and the Art of Laughing at Our Own Flaws.

I watched the third season of “1670” and enjoyed it more than the second. It has better pacing, more laughs and the kind of absurd humour that lets you relax without overthinking every scene.

Yaesu FTX-1 OPTIMA 100W – my ideal radio, which I won’t be buying just yet.

The Yaesu FTX-1 OPTIMA appeals to me as a single radio for station and field use. It could replace the FT-991A, the station-based FTM-300D and the Xiegu G90, freeing up desk space. The problem arises during contests, when I operate on HF while talking locally on VHF/UHF at the same time.
